Sessions recorded on October 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2020

Open to Chiropractors, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Myofunctional Therapists, Nurses and anyone curious about healing.

Every Wednesday in October, two experts in the field of photobiomodulation (PBM) will teach and guide you on specific uses of PBM and how practical applications are applied in a wide range of treatments. Laser energy has many applications for oral health management including local and systemic influences. These range from post-operative wound healing decreasing reliance on opioid medications to anti-inflammatory effects both centered around photobiomodulation (PBM). Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can have dramatic effects on managing microbial disease of the oral cavity without initiating antibiotic resistance. Attendees will receive links to the recorded sessions after the Symposium ends.

Presentations include the following topics:

  • Pain control after surgery.
  • Improved healing of implants and grafts.
  • Treating dry socket.
  • Eliminating the use of opioids.
  • Nerve regeneration.
  • Treating facial pain and TMD pain.
  • Treating soft tissue lesions such as cold sores and aphthous ulcers.
  • Preventing and/or treating mucositis.
  • Laser devices; freestanding and using surgical diode laser devices for PBM will also be discussed.
Educational Objectives:
  • Understand the science and dosage parameters of PBM
  • Recognize what dental procedures can be successfully carried out with PBM
  • Learn how to manage pain for your patients with PBM
  • Learn what devices can be used for PBM in a dental practice

Attendees can earn up to 8 CEUs for attending all of the sessions.
Registration fees: ALD Members  $195 | Non-members $245.
Registration for an individual days: ALD Members $50 | Non-members $65

Basic Principles of Photobiomodulation

The presenters will introduce the basic principles of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy and its appropriate clinical application in managing oral health. This presentation will give a brief overview of the history and the basic scientific background of PBM, in addition to its biostimulatory, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects in clinical dentistry.

Educational Objectives
  • Explain the mechanism of photobiomodulation and its clinical effects.
  • Recognize the use of photobiomodulation and its effect on oral health.

Arun Darbar

8:00 PM ET
  • Arun Darbar, BDS, DGDP(UK) | Private Practice, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, United Kingdom

PBM in Everyday General Dental Practice

This a synopsis of photobiomodulation (PBM) use in general dentistry using different wavelengths and devices. This presentation will illustrate how clinicians can use this modality every day, promote better healing, and help our patients with pain management and overcome some of the complications that may occur in post-conventional dental treatment or problems that patients present within our clinics.

Educational Objectives
  • Understand what wavelengths can be used for PBM.
  • Identify which devices PBM is limited to if any, and why.
  • Learn how to improve the outcomes for our patients’ benefit.
  • Describe how to set up this modality in a busy general practice.

OCTOBER 14, 2020

7:00 PM ET

  • James Carroll, FRSM, CEO | THOR Photomedicine Ltd, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom

Photobiomodulation for Orofacial Pain

Photobiomodulation (PBM) has many applications in dentistry with clinical trial evidence published for a wide range of painful pathologies, including postoperative pain, aphthous ulcers, orthodontic pain, burning mouth syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, stomatitis, oral mucositis, dentin hypersensitivity, temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and neck pain. PBM can also be used to desensitize teeth and even induce anesthesia.

How does PBM do this, what is the evidence, and how does one treat a patient? What treatment parameters (wavelength, power, beam area, irradiance, pulses, treatment time, energy and fluence) are required for a successful treatment? How much PBM is enough, how much is too much, how many treatments are needed, what intervals are required between treatment? What are the contraindications and treatment reactions, and are there any adverse effects? This presentation will address these issues.

Educational Objectives
  • Relate the potential range of PBM applications.
  • Describe how PBM works.
  • Understand dose as it relates to PBM treatment.
  • Comprehend how to treat various dental conditions with PBM.

James Carroll presented a webinar just as lockdown from the pandemic started. Watch it here COVID-19: Speculation on Possible Effects of Photobiomodulation (PBM)

Managing Oral Mucositis with PBM

This session will focus on the use of photobiomodulation (PBM) in the management of oral mucositis in oncology patients.

Educational Objectives
  • Identify the prevalence of oral mucositis (OM) in the oncology population.
  • Describe the benefits of PBM in the management of OM in this population.
  • Identify barriers to implementing a PBM program in oncology

Medically Compromised Patients

In today’s dental practice we come into contact with patients that have very complex and compromised medical histories. Lasers have allowed me to treat many of these patients in my office while keeping them on all their daily medications and eliminating the need for additional hospitalizations. All of these cases have been treated in collaboration with the patients’ medical doctors.

This presentation will demonstrate laser techniques that you will be able to incorporate into your practice. You will learn methods for preventing and decreasing the symptoms of oral mucositis and how to treat emergency patients that are currently undergoing chemo/radiation therapy. The discussion will include a pre- and postoperative treatment regime for extractions and root canal therapies. Also described, will be laser treatment techniques for patients with many varied medical conditions, including cancer, secondary myeloplastic anemia, and other blood disorders, pulmonary embolisms, heart surgery, severe lymphedema, cicatricial pemphigoid, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and neurological disorders. These techniques decrease patient postoperative pain and allow for better and faster healing with far fewer postoperative complications.

Educational Objectives
  • Summarize the principles of acupuncture by photobiomodulation.
  • Learn how to proactively treat cancer patients with photobiomodulation to prevent oral mucositis and to decrease the severity of this condition in those that already have it.
  • Review the proper technique for achieving hemostasis with diode and Nd:YAG lasers.
  • Identify pre- and postoperative extraction and root canal photobiomodulation techniques.
  • Discover how to control severe tremors in patients with Parkinson’s disease and motor disorders with photobiomodulation.

PBM in Treatment of Facial Pain

This session will discuss how to differentially diagnose facial pain conditions, and how to treat them with photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). One of the key points is differentiating which conditions should be treated by those who are not experienced in treating facial pain conditions. The presentation will link treatments to articles in the peer-reviewed literature.

Educational Objectives
  • Learn the function of the various parts of the facial system.
  • Identify the key tools to diagnose facial pain problems.
  • Specify where to treat with PBMT and determine dosage and treatment frequency protocols.
  • Differentiate which conditions to treat depending on one’s skill level.
