ALD Student Scholars

Seidner Student Scholarship Program Objectives
The Dr. Eugene M. Seidner Student Scholarship is intended to promote the advancement of dental laser education and clinical research. The program encourages undergraduate and graduate dental students in the different dental disciplines to deepen their knowledge of the use of lasers in dentistry. It provides financial assistance enabling successful applicants to present their work at the Academy's annual conference and by doing so allows participation in the educational lectures and workshops aimed to advance the study of lasers and their correct and safe use in dentistry. A special award for Pediatric Dentistry is available to pediatric dental students. Special Award for Pediatric Dentistry - Through a generous annual pledge specifically earmarked for pediatric dental students, ALD is pleased to implement beginning in 2010 a special recognition award within the Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship program for pediatric dental students. This donation recognizes the commitment to pediatric dental education by ALD member Dr. Lawrence Kotlow, a pediatric dentist practicing in Albany, N.Y.

What is awarded?

  • One year of ALD membership
  • Conference registration fees
  • ALD Dental Laser Standard Level Certification Course registration fees
  • Round trip coach air transportation
  • Up to 4 hotel nights at the host hotel
  • Meals that are already included in conference registration (meals not scheduled within the conference program are not included)
  • Upon a successful presentation, an award in the form of a framed certificate for participation will be presented to all Scholarship recipients
  • A cash award for $1000 will be divided amongst the selected undergraduate and graduate scholars.

An Innovative Buffalo Fluoride Laser Odontoplasty (BFLO) Approach to Prevent Dental Caries

Dr. Varsani is a dentist and an epidemiologist-to-be. He grew up in India and earned his BDS from Saurashtra University, India, and is currently pursuing an MS degree with a concentration in epidemiology from the University at Buffalo, New York. His research interests include dental caries, diabetes, temporomandibular joint disorders, oral health disparities, oral esthetics, and the translation of research into practice. Currently, he is working on a couple of scientific projects that revolve around dentistry and epidemiology. During his undergraduate program, Dr. Varsani attended multiple national and state conferences and delivered multiple paper and poster presentations. He also conducted research on mental foramen at the same time. His current research is focused on developing novel applications for lasers in dentistry. He strives to work on three synergistic fronts by bringing epidemiological discoveries to lab research and translating these into clinical practice.

Disclosure: The Arany lab at the University at Buffalo has received unrestricted gifts of laser devices from several manufacturers. Dr. Praveen Arany also consults for several commercial, academic, and government entities.

The impact ALD has made on students and researchers has increased significantly through generous donations and the growth of ALD’s Dr. Eugene Seidner Student Scholarship and Grants Program.

In 2004, our goal was $100,000. In 2012 we reached that goal. And 6 years later research grants were added. Today, the funds are safeguarded to be used for future research and student scholarship.

Since its inception, the Seidner Program has awarded $120,000 to honor 36 dental students in 6 countries.

Since 2018, in just 3 years, the Program has provided an additional $56,000 is research grants to 6 researchers at 4 universities. Applications for Research Grants for 2023 will open later in 2022.  The Dr. Eugene Seidner Board of Trustees decided not to open grants for 2022.

With experienced dentists who use lasers on a daily basis, I not only learned different techniques and types of lasers that would work best for certain procedures, but also had hands on experience with various lasers. The ALD conference was a success thanks to the help of the compassionate members who brought his event all together. I look forward to the next conference in Palm Springs, California."
